Katie McGinty has overtaken Joe Sestak in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race, according to a public opinion poll conducted amid a flurry of TV ads in advance of Tuesday's primary.

A Harper poll of likely Democratic voters showed the former state environmental secretary leading the former congressman and retired Navy admiral by a 39-33 margin. The poll, based on interviews from April 21-23, was the first to give an outright advantage to McGinty.

In the Democratic attorney general's race, Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro led the field with 41 percent against Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala, at 23 percent, and Northampton County DA John Morganelli, at 15 percent. One-fifth of voters remained undecided.
