He says the poll results would be useful information in addressing the relationship between police officers and community members. 

"The outcome really underscored what some of us had believed for some time," Flaherty said.

For results, 450 people were solicited by phone. Those who were questioned were all registered voters. They were asked five questions.

In response to the question "Do you approve or disapprove of how officers handle their job?," 90 percent approved and 6 percent disapproved. In response to another question, "Do you trust officers to use good judgment in their use of deadly force?," 85 percent said "yes," 7 percent said "no," and 8 percent were not sure.

"For the overwhelming majority, they're saying that they trust us," Flaherty said.
